बाल्ड ईगल्स को एवियन इन्फ्लूएंजा से खतरा है • Earth.com

near extinction in the 1960s, bald eagle populations rebounded significantly u0026#8211; a phenomenon considered by many scientists a massive conservation success story. However, a recent study led by the u003ca href=” of Georgiau003c/au003e (UGA) has found that a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza u0026#8211; known as H1N1 u0026#8211; is currently killing an unprecedented number of bald eagles, thus endangering once more this species.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eAccording to the researchers, in 2022, under half of bald eagle nests along coastal Georgia successfully fledged at least one eagle, which is 30 percent below average for this region, while in a county in Florida, the success rate of nests was halved, decreasing from 86.5 percent to 41 percent.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003e“We had reports from people who faithfully monitor eagle nests year after year with these heartbreaking stories of an adult eagle found dead below their nest. Within a few days, often its mate and the chicks were also found dead below the nest. It is clear the virus is causing nest failures,” said study lead author Nicole Nemeth, an associate professor of Veterinary Medicine at UGA.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eThe first cases of avian influenza in bald eagles were confirmed in April 2022. Since then, the number of cases has skyrocketed, with infections reported not only in bald eagles, but also in a variety of other birds, including vultures and other raptors, waterfowl such as ducks and geese, aquatic birds like pelicans and herons, commercially farmed poultry, and even some songbirds. While 6,200 cases have been officially reported across the U.S., this number is most likely an undercount.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003e“I think the number of wild bird cases is drastically underreported. People will submit one snow goose, for example, and it will test positive for the virus. And then they’ll tell you, ‘Well, there are thousands of geese dying at the same site.’ But it only goes down as one infected bird,” Nemeth explained.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eSince the virus can persist in water for over a year, the birds most at risk of infection are those living in coastal or other aquatic areas, or those that prey on birds living in such environments. Birds can catch the virus from spending time in the water and carry it to new locations during their migration, while raptors such as eagles or vultures can pick it up when they consume infected birds. Moreover, the virus has also spread to wild mammals, such as red foxes, coyotes, racoons, opossums, seals, and even some bears. While the risk posed to humans remains low, many of these species could experience significant declines.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003e“A virus that can spread and be maintained as this virus can, it’s everywhere now. We can’t contain the virus, and we can’t vaccinate wild birds. But we can document the losses and try to help conserve affected species and populations the best we can,” Nemeth concluded.u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eThe study is published in the journal u003ca href=” Scientific Reportsu003c/emu003eu003c/au003eu003cemu003e.u003c/emu003eu003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003e—u003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eu003cemu003eBy u003c/emu003eu003ca href=”mailto:[email protected]”u003eu003cemu003eAndrei Ionescuu003c/emu003eu003c/au003eu003cemu003e, u003c/emu003eu003ca href=” Staff Writeru003c/emu003eu003c/pu003ennnnu003cpu003eCheck us out on u003ca href=” a free app brought to you by Eric Ralls and Earth.com.u003c/pu003en”,”post_title”:”Bald eagles are threatened by avian influenza”,”post_excerpt”:”After their near extinction in the 1960s, bald eagle populations rebounded significantly – a phenomenon considered by many scientists a massive conservation success story”,”post_status”:”publish”,”comment_status”:”closed”,”ping_status”:”closed”,”post_password”:””,”post_name”:”bald-eagles-are-threatened-by-avian-influenza”,”to_ping”:””,”pinged”:””,”post_modified”:”2023-03-18 14:42:16″,”post_modified_gmt”:”2023-03-18 20:42:16″,”post_content_filtered”:””,”post_parent”:0,”guid”:” src=” class=”img-fluid h-100 wp-post-image” alt=”After their near extinction in the 1960s, bald eagle populations rebounded significantly – a phenomenon considered by many scientists a massive conservation success story” decoding=”async” loading=”lazy” srcset=” 960w, 450w, 270w, 360w” sizes=”(max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px” /u003e”,”author_name”:”Chrissy Sexton”,”author_url”:””,”author_avatar”:”u003cimg alt=”” src=” srcset=” 2x” class=”avatar avatar-32 photo img-fluid rounded-circle w-auto” height=”32″ width=”32″ loading=’lazy’ decoding=’async’/u003e”,”formatted_date”:”03-18-2023″},”sidebar”:[{“ID”:1915886,”post_author”:”13″,”post_date”:”2023-03-18 14:42:15″,”post_date_gmt”:”2023-03-18 20:42:15″,”post_content”:”u003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eAfter their near extinction in the 1960s, bald eagle populations rebounded significantly – a phenomenon considered by many scientists a massive conservation success story. Nevertheless, he stressed that the jumbling together of genetic materials from the virus and the animal does not conclusively prove that a racoon dog was initially infected and then passed the virus to humans; in fact, it is possible that the opposite scenario might have happened, with various animals catching the virus from humans.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eHowever, according to Michael Worobey, an evolutionary biologist at the u003ca href=” of Arizonau003c/au003e, this finding is “just one more brick on this massive wall of evidence that all fits together. If it weren’t so politicized, it’s one of the clearest sets of evidence for how a pandemic emerged that we’ve ever had.”u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003e“Top line is that there were animals at the market and they are in the exact location where the virus was,” added Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the u003ca href=” of Saskatchewanu003c/au003e. “We can’t say for sure that they were infected, but this is very strong evidence supporting that the pandemic’s origin was due to the live animals at Huanan market.”u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eAfter analyzing the genetic sequences, the experts reached out to the Chinese scientists that originally posted the data on GISAID for a possible collaboration but, soon after that, the data disappeared from the database, highlighting once more the intensely politicized dimensions of the pandemic, and China’s refusal to admit the massive illegal wildlife trade occurring in its markets.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eThis led WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to renew his call for China to share scientific data on the origin of the pandemic on Friday. “We continue to call on China to be transparent in sharing data, and to conduct the necessary investigations and share the results. –u003enu003cpu003eAccording to a new study led by the u003ca href=” of Liègeu003c/au003e in Belgium, streams and rivers in the Andean Mountains are hotspots for greenhouse gas emissions, contributing 35 percent and 72 percent of riverine emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in the Amazon basin, the largest river on our planet.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eThe Amazon River originates in the Andes Mountains and, after flowing through Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, and Brazil, it reaches the Atlantic Ocean. Due to the erosion of rocks at its headwaters in the Andes, mineral particles are transported over 3,000 kilometers across South America to the river’s mouth at Belem in Brazil, where they flow into the Atlantic. While all the previous studies of CO2 and CH4 emissions have been conducted in the plains of central Amazon – about 1,000 kilometers from the Andes – researchers have now examined the rates of emissions of u003ca href=” riversu003c/au003e, located close to Amazon’s origin.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eAccording to the experts, the Amazon consists of three river systems nested in mountains and spread across plains, all of which have different emission rates. First, the small and rapidly flowing mountain streams pass over steep and rocky terrain, promoting a vigorous physical exchange of gases with the atmosphere, even though the steep terrain does not allow for a large accumulation of soils supporting the production of CO2 and CH4.u0026nbsp;u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eSecond, the lowland river is wide and winding, spreading over flat terrain. While the slower flow of water does not promote the exchange of gases with the atmosphere as vigorously as in the mountain rivers, the higher temperatures allow for thicker soils to accumulate, favoring the production and transport of CO2 and CH4 to lowland watercourses. wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eOver 85 percent of the Earth’s mammal, bird, and amphibian species live in mountain forests. Unfortunately, according to a new study led by the u003ca href=” of Leedsu003c/au003e in the UK and the u003ca href=” University of Science and Technologyu003c/au003e in China, these forests are currently disappearing at an alarming rate, with 78.1 million hectares (7.1 percent) of mountain forests – an area larger than the size of Texas – lost since the beginning of the new millennium. Most of this loss has occurred in tropical u003ca href=” hotspots, thus significantly threatening a variety of already endangered animal species. u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eThese areas were previously protected from deforestation by their rugged location. But as lowland regions became depleted or subject to protection at the beginning of the 21u003csupu003estu003c/supu003e centuries, mountain forests became increasingly exploited. u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eTo clarify the current situation, the experts tracked changes in mountain forests on an annual basis from 2001 to 2018, measuring both losses and gains in tree cover, estimating the rate at which change was occurring, comparing different elevations and types of forests (such as boreal, tropical, or temperate), and exploring the impacts of forest loss on biodiversity.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003e“Knowledge of the dynamics of forest loss along elevation gradients worldwide is crucial for understanding how and where the amount of forested area available for forest species will change as they shift in response to warming,” the authors explained.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eThe investigation revealed that logging was the main driver of forest loss (42 percent), followed by wildfires (29 percent), shifting or “slash-and-burn” cultivation (15 percent), and permanent or semi-permanent agricultural practices (10 percent). However, the importance of these factors was found to differ from region to region. The most significant losses occurred in Asia, South America, Africa, Europe, and Australia, with North America and Oceania appearing to fare slightly better.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eUnfortunately, the rate of mountain forest loss appears to be accelerating, with the annual rate of loss rising by 50 percent from the 21u003csupu003estu003c/supu003e century’s first to second decade (which witnessed about 5.2 million hectares annual losses). This acceleration is likely driven by the rapid agricultural expansion into highland regions in mainland Southeast Asia, as well as by increased logging due to either depletion or protection of lowland forests.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eAlthough tropical forests experienced the greatest loss (42 percent of the global total), they also had a faster rate of regrowth compared to temperate and boreal mountain forests. While protected areas experienced less forest loss than unprotected ones, this may not be sufficient to protect endangered species.u003c/pu003enu003c!– /wp:paragraph –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003e“Regarding sensitive species in biodiversity hotspots, the critical issue extends beyond simply preventing forest loss. –u003ennu003c!– wp:paragraph –u003enu003cpu003eThe researchers concluded by highlighting the importance of reaching a balance between the protection of forests and human livelihoods. “Any new measures
