Three people died and two were taken to the hospital after a driver in a stolen sports utility vehicle fled the police and crashed in Middle Island on Saturday night, police said.
Suffolk County police attempted to arrest Nahriek Belford, 17, of Bellport, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue, after noticing him that he was driving recklessly and that he was not safe. He did not stop in front of a stop sign on Main Street in Yaphank at about 23:45. Police said Sunday in a press release. The vehicle was allegedly stolen Thursday on Montauk Road in the East Patchogue, police said.
Belford escaped and a police vehicle pursued him while an officer radioed a reinforcement, police said. About five minutes later, while he was driving west on Middle Country Road, Belford was hitting a 2009 Honda CR-V that was turning left on Birchwood Park Drive.
The 74-year-old Honda driver and his 71-year-old wife were declared dead at the scene, the police said. A 19-year-old passenger in the Nissan is also dead.
The identity of the victims has not been revealed, pending the notification of their families, the police said.
Belford and another Nissan passenger were taken to the Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries, police said.
Belford was charged with reckless endangerment, although the police announced other charges. It will be continued at a later date.
The Middle Country Road, a main road also known as State Route 25, was closed in both directions until about 9:30 am. A Suffolk police wrecker took the Nissan Rogue, which was on the side of the road with its crumpled front and four closed doors, around 11:15 am.
The scene of the accident lay between two residential developments: the Eagleview apartment complex and the community of Birchwood at Spring Lake.
Zack O'Connor, 49, who lives in Eagleview and is waiting for the bus on Sunday morning, said the police told him earlier in the morning that no one could leave the complex. The police could not confirm if people were allowed to leave.
Suffolk County's major case detectives are investigating the accident. Anyone with information is asked to call the main unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
About four hours after the accident and one and a half kilometers to the west, one passenger was killed and another hospitalized as a result of a crash in Coram with a single car, police said .
Accidents were not related. "They have nothing to do with each other," said a police spokeswoman.
