—Nutcracker returns … Is it true that it is the most represented ballet in the world?
Sure it is and with plenty of reasons! The versions of "Nutcracker" are innumerable and for all tastes. The key, of course, is in the magnificent score that Chaikovski composed almost at the end of his life for the story written by the great Hoffmann and that reaches the composer through Alexandre Dumas. A curious fact is that this ballet was premiered in St. Petersburg in 1892 with an opera of an act, "Iolanta", also by Chaikovski, and that it is also a story about a blind princess who manages to heal and see. "Nutcracker" and "Iolanta" are sister works that inhabit fantasy worlds and in which the protagonist – Marie or Clara and Iolanta (Yolanda) – must go through a symbolic or magical test to reach the light or the fantastic land of sweets.
—The Alliance with the Royal Opera House is a luxury contribution to the cultural life of the city …
We are making a dream come true for several years: see the wonderful ballet and opera productions of the London Covent Garden. This first season has just begun with the Mozartian "Don Giovanni". We will see the three great ballets of Chaikovski: «Nutcracker», «Sleeping Beauty» and «Swan Lake». In addition, in opera I have to highlight the new production of the Beethovenian "Fidelio" that coincides with the 250 years of the birth of the German composer in 2020. Antonio Pappano directs and the cast is headed by Jonas Kaufmann and the young Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen. All operas are subtitled in Spanish.
– What audiences are these functions intended for?
The appetite for lyric art in Santo Domingo has been aroused. But we want more! Students only pay 250 pesos to enter a function of the Royal Opera season on a large screen at the Eduardo Brito National Theater. Opera is theater, let's not forget it. And these productions are absolutely sensational.
"What about the singing students?" Are you already projecting internationally?
Four Dominican singers have just auditioned for the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and the soprano Carmenchu Domínguez sang along with Ferruccio Furlanetto and Carlos Álvarez the "Don Carlo" of Verdi. The tenor José Heredia is also very active in the United States and Nathalie Peña-Comas continues to perform in European theaters. Sor course, this group is already professional. There are excellent young voices. The Symphony Foundation will continue with the program directed by Master Kamal Khan.
—This London program joins the Met in New York, which has been enjoyed here a few years ago. Has gender found the ally it needed in technology?
There are people who understand that it is the opposite: that the broadcasts to the cinema are annihilating the opera, because the image is favored over the voice. My opinion? That thanks to technology, opera is being taken to very diverse places and audiences. For us, for example, "our" opera house is the Met in New York. Of course, nothing compares to hearing in the theater the voice without amplifying, the musical instrument par excellence and the most glorious of all, but we must not lose sight of the fact that opera is theater, drama, and that Singers represent characters. Here is the greatness, for example, of Placido Domingo and María Callas, who have had it all.
