A terrified girl dialed 999 frantically as she watched a small knife kill her mother in their home

A terrified girl frantically dialed 999 while a knife maker stabbed mom at their home.

The 13-year-old looked in horror as her mother Melissa Belshaw suffered “catastrophic” injuries on Wednesday afternoon (May 20).

Within minutes, the police arrived home on Upholland Road, Wigan, and arrested a 36-year-old man. He is interrogated on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

A man in his forties, understood as a neighbor who courageously intervened, was seriously injured even after being injured. He is in stable condition in the hospital.

Police say the attacker was known to 32-year-old beautician Melissa – and that there is no threat to the community at large.

Speaking on Thursday afternoon, Superintendent Chris Bridge praised the actions of Melissa’s daughter, who claimed to have received specialist support following the “horrendous” incident.

“The lady’s 13-year-old daughter was present at the time,” he added.

“As a result of his contact with the police, we have been unable to assist and arrest this man.

“I can’t imagine what this girl is going through. She has to [have been] horrendous experience.

“My thoughts and prayers go to you and the other family members.”

Melissa Belshaw

After Melissa’s tragic death, people close to her paid homage to their “caring and adorable” mother.

They said she couldn’t wait to open her beauty salon, The Lash Room, before she was killed.

Floral tributes were left on the scene in the village of Billinge, where a community was left shocked.

A message praised the “courage” of Melissa’s “little girl”.

In a tribute written on Facebook – shared here with her permission – Kimberley Phillips wrote: “Melissa must have been terrified beyond imagination, her daughter scared to death – now scarred for the rest of her life.

“Poor Melissa’s mother, no parent should ever bury their child.

“Melissa’s family is absolutely destroyed from the heart’s point of view now she must live forever with this loss. She is gone now, she is gone. Painful, with a broken heart, forever. Horrible circumstances.

“Poor Melissa. Never to be seen again.

“Some vile heartless apology from a human being took her life.

“How? Why? What? Where? When? Many will ask, but do you really care? Why if you don’t do it why do you ask me?

“The anguish now that will come now is REAL, which matters.”

Friends described Melissa Belshaw as “loving and caring”

Investigators believe there may have been numerous witnesses to the incident and have urged them to come forward to assist in the investigation.

“The community of Wigan and Billinge will be shocked by this horrendous and horrendous episode,” said Superintendent Bridge.

“It was a sunny afternoon and there were a number of people who were in the area.

“We are aware that there are people who have not come forward at the moment and who have been making movies on their phones or other devices. Possibly they have vital evidence that could prove crucial for this investigation.

“I would like to urge those people, if you have information, please come forward for the sake of this lady and her family.”
