An eight-year-old girl was hit by a car in Salford.

Rescue services were called at around 10:40 am on Monton Road in the Monton suburb, after a collision between a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a pedestrian had been reported.

The child was declared dead at the scene.

A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and detained, said Manchester police (GMP).

The Monton Road remains closed between the Cavendish Road and the Half Edge Lane.

Police Sgt Lee Westhead of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) said, "A tragic child has lost his life this morning and we're doing everything we can to support his family at this devastating time."

"Road closures will be maintained during the afternoon as investigations are underway, so avoid the area if possible."
