Apple’s AirTags have been removed from the shelves by major Australian retailer Officeworks. The new product was just available for purchase on April 30, and the exact reason for the removal is not confirmed at this time.
In a statement provided to TechRadar, an Officeworks spokesperson said: “The Apple AirTag range will be temporarily unavailable for purchase from Officeworks.”
“Officeworks will not stock the product until further guidance is provided by the Australian Competition and Consumers Commission (ACCC).
“Officeworks continues to work with Apple to address any security concerns,” the statement read.
While Officeworks has yet to elaborate on the removal of Apple AirTags, several unconfirmed theories are emerging online.
As reported by Gizmodo, news of the AirTags recall first surfaced on Reddit’s r / Australia, where a Redittor said they couldn’t buy the tracker at an Officeworks store, and was told by staff that the product had been recalled by safety reasons.
The Reddit post reads: “Finally, someone came down from the office and explained that the AirTags had been recalled due to safety concerns about the ease with which a child can remove the button battery.”
The Reddit thread is currently flagged as ‘unverified’ by moderators and, at the time of writing, Apple AirTags are still available from various Australian retailers, including Apple’s online store.
However, as another commenter pointed out in the thread, some Australian retailers, including Big W and JB Hi-Fi, display a warning message on the product’s button battery, stating that the batteries are harmful to children if swallowed.
AirTags are currently not available for purchase from Australian retailer Big W’s online store, although it is unclear if this is due to the devices being recalled or simply out of stock.
The Australian Competition and Consumers Commission (ACCC) has been actively campaigning for increased button cell battery awareness and safety measures for several years. TechRadar has contacted the ACCC for comment and we will update this story as more details emerge.
Apple AirTags are wireless location tracking devices whose location can be monitored on Mac and iOS devices through the Find My app. Small and circular, they are designed to slip into a wallet or bag, or attach to keys and other items by inserting the device into an AirTag-compatible key fob (purchased separately).
