Apple just announced in a press release The new search network compatible with third-party accessories, and the first manufacturers have already announced their compatible devices for next week.
The Search app has been helping to recover lost iPhones for years and is slowly gaining new features and compatible devices, but still within the Apple ecosystem. Now, with the new third-party accessories, the potential of this research network is multiplied.
For over a decade, our customers have trusted Find My to locate their lost or stolen Apple devices, while protecting their privacy. We’re now bringing the powerful search capabilities of Find My, one of our most popular services, to more people through the Find My Network Accessories program. We’re excited to see how Belkin, Chipolo and VanMoof are using this technology, and we can’t wait to see what other partners are creating.
This new program for third-party manufacturers will be part of “Made for iPhone” (MFi). All products must comply with each of Apple’s security measures and their privacy policies. These MFi certified items can be added from the “Items” tab. and they will have the badge that certifies their compatibility. These devices can use Apple’s U1 chip, so the location in the search app is more accurate.
The latest S3 and X3 electric bikes from VanMoof, the SOUNDFORM Freedom True wireless headphones Belkin and the article finder Chipolo ONE Spot will be the first device to support this new third-party research network. Apple has confirmed that new manufacturers will join the research network. This network will be made up of millions of Apple devices that will anonymously and collaboratively help locate these compatible devices, even if the design iPhone is miles away. The confidentiality of this system is guaranteed by end-to-end encryption, so that neither Apple nor the manufacturer will be able to know the location of the devices.
