Apply for relegation if the points per game decide the Premier League table Football news

Bournemouth or West Ham could face the decline in several ways

Last update: 15/05/20 7:58

Who would be relegated if the points per game decided the Premier League table?

The answer: it depends on the method you use. The simplest way calculates the current point ratio of each team and adds it to the remaining matches, taking into account the average goals scored and suffered.

Using this system, the top five remain unchanged with Liverpool ending the champion season with 107 record points – 30 points ahead of Manchester City – followed by Leicester, Chelsea and Manchester United.

Currently with a game in hand, Sheffield United passes Wolves in sixth place to earn the automatic qualification in the Europa League and Arsenal rivals Tottenham to conquer the eighth place and the pride of North London.

The bottom half ranking is identical to the current table, which means that Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth face the drop. Watford and West Ham end up on points identical to the Cherries but the marginal difference in goals guarantees safety.

Weighted form for home and away

Much has been made of the reluctance of the lower club to play in neutral places and lose the advantage at home. In fact, most of the clubs fighting for survival won most of the points on home soil.

When considering home and out of shape factoring, the top five still remain unchanged. Sheffield United continues to climb over wolves, but the Spurs remain ahead of Arsenal in eighth place, while Crystal Palace positions itself in front of Burnley for the first time.

But key changes occur where it matters. Bournemouth avoids relegation by just 0.1 points and West Ham slips into the pitch with 35.6 points.

Neville: the relegation points per game is not fair

Gary Neville believes that a relegation points per game in the Premier League would be unfair if the remaining matches cannot be played.

Neville said Tuesday The Football Show: “I don’t think the relegation is correct based on the points per game. I think if we played football, it is only fair that football be played for promotion and relegation.

“But I think on the basis of the points per game, being relegated with nine games to play, with so much to play, so tight at the bottom and with so much at stake, doesn’t seem right to me personally.”
