Thus, Baleària, pioneer in the use of natural gas in maritime transport worldwide, will be part of a foundation that is the sustainable benchmark for companies regarding climate change and its direct and indirect effects.
“Joining FEC reaffirms our commitment to the defense of the planet, which from Baleària we have materialized with the use of natural gas in our fleet and the reduction of emissions that affect the greenhouse effect, among other projects”, Adolfo Utor, president of Baleària, has pointed out. It should be remembered that the shipping company, a world pioneer in the use of natural gas, is carrying out a fleet plan with an investment of 380 million euros to have up to 9 gas-powered vessels by 2021, including new constructions and re-engines. Currently, the shipping company already has 6 of these vessels, and has begun work to re-engine one more. On the other hand, it has also started to install sensors and measurement systems on some ships to monitor fuel use and emissions in real time.
For Elvira Carles, director of the Fundación Empresa y Clima, “the most efficient and sustainable maritime transport sector is going to be very important in the fight against climate change; collaborating with Baleària in its environmental response is one of our objectives ”.
Joining the FEC will allow Baleària to participate in an influential platform in the formulation of environmental policies, as well as belonging to a wide group of companies with a common interest in the fight against climate change, which exchange experiences, challenges, concerns and best practices through the different meetings they organize.
As a Gold member of the Fundación Empresa y Clima, Grupo Baleària will also be able to access first-rate networking with stakeholders, governments, associations and the media, as well as participate in the leading events in the sector in which the FEC collaborates. In addition, it will be able to be present in the daily meetings with the negotiators of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and participate in the Conferences of the Parties (COP) to which the FEC attends as an Observer Member of the United Nations since 2010.
Baleària is the leading shipping company in the transport of passengers and cargo in connections with the Balearic Islands, and also links Ceuta, Melilla and the Canary Islands with the peninsula. Internationally, it offers services in Morocco, Algeria and the Caribbean (between the United States and the Bahamas).
It is a pioneer worldwide in the use of natural gas and is committed to putting technology at the service of customers in its smart ships and the use of big data to improve its efficiency.
It is defined as a citizen and responsible company, which has assumed the United Nations 2030 Agenda as the roadmap that guides its activity in the areas of economic, social and environmental sustainability.
In 2019, it transported more than 4,480,000 passengers and 6,111,000 linear meters of cargo. In addition, its fleet of 32 ships sailed more than 1.6 million miles. With more than 1,800 employees in its workforce, it had a turnover of 452 million euros.
