Buenos Aires, Feb 12 (EFE) .- Banfield, current Argentine soccer runner-up, surprised Racing Club on Friday night and defeated it 2-0 in one of the three matches that marked the start of the Copa de la Argentine Professional Soccer League.
Juan Pablo Pereyra and Giuliano Galoppo converted for Banfield into a match valid for Group B of this contest and that marked the premiere with the defeat of Juan Antonio Pizzi on the ‘Academy’ bench.
In the other meeting of this Group B played on the same night, Colón beat Central Córdoba 0-3 in Santiago del Estero with goals from Luis Rodríguez, Tomás Sandoval and Nicolás Leguizamón.
For their part, in the only match this Friday for Zone A, Unión and Atlético Tucumán equaled 2-2 with goals from Ezequiel Cañete and Marco Borgnino for the local team, while Ramiro Carrera and Santiago Vergini scored for the visiting team .
After the late consecration as two-time champion of Boca Juniors due to the coronavirus pandemic and the suspension of relegation, this new gaucho contest presents two new protagonists: the promoted Sarmiento de Junín and Platense, in a tournament that will be divided into two zones of 13 teams each.
In this way, each day of the Argentine championship has six games per group and an interzone with free teams, most of which will be classics between historical rivals. On the first day, and to allow the newcomers to rest, the crossing between areas that Platense and Sarmiento de Junín were to dispute was postponed.
The two-time defending champion Boca Juniors will debut in Zone B on Sunday at home against Gimnasia and Esgrima La Plata. As the only incorporation, the ‘xeneizes’ team added Marcos Rojo, who terminated his contract with Manchester United and joined the squad led by Miguel Ángel Russo.
River Plate will also debut on Sunday but in Zone A against Estudiantes in La Plata. The ‘millionaire’ team, which has just completed its first season without titles since Marcelo Gallardo arrived, added Agustín Palavecino, from Deportivo Cali, Héctor David Martínez, repechage of Defense and Justice, and Jonatan Maidana, who arrives free from Toluca Mexican.
The Independiente, with Julio César Falcioni as new coach, will debut next Monday as a local against Lanús, while going through a delicate economic and institutional situation that allowed him to add only Juan Manuel Insaurralde (Colo Colo from Chile) and the return of Sebastián Palacios ( Newell’s Old Boys).
Finally, San Lorenzo, under the new mandate of Diego Dabove, will debut on Saturday at Arsenal de Sarandí with the possibility that the Romero brothers will occupy their respective places on the relay bench. Diego Braghieri (Atlético Nacional), Jalil Elías (Godoy Cruz), Lucas Melano (Atlético Tucumán) and Franco Troyanski (Unión) are the four names that he added to the ‘azulgrana’ squad.
