The US lost 89: 79 to France in the quarter-finals of China's basketball World Cup on Wednesday.
The USA had won the last two World Cups and not lost in 58 international matches, a run that goes back to the year 2006.
France came in 51:41 in the third quarter before the USA took the lead 72-65, but the French fought back to claim victory.
Evan Fournier scored 22 points while Rudy Gobert finished 21st.
France face Argentina in the semi-finals on Friday, while Spain play in the other match against Australia or the Czech Republic.
This is the first time that the United States has not won a medal at the World Cup since 2002 when they finished sixth.
