A British man who was in Australia for less than 24 hours was indicted after being violently attacked near Bondi Beach in Sydney.

The 35-year-old, who has not yet been named, approached another man in the early hours of the morning and attacked and threatened him, police from New South Wales said.

Officers said the 59-year-old victim tried to escape when the man continued to attack him and steal his cell phone.

The victim was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A pedestrian alerted the police about the Campbell Parade incident at about 1:30 am, and the British citizen was charged with assault charges for serious robbery.

He was dismissed and is on trial in Parramatta, west of Sydney, on Saturday.
