The last friday one of the three pumps in the ‘parking’ San Francisco Centro broke down that continuously, even in summer, extracts groundwater from Cerro de Santa Catalina and that seeps through the screen wall under Álamos street. When that happens, the small cistern fills up and the lowest floor of the car park gets flooded, as explained by the head of operations of the municipal car park company (EPASSA), Fernando Nicás.
It is not the first time it has happened. In fact, the extractor pumps are connected to the ‘parking’ control office that is on the upper floor and the system warns if one has stopped working. In this case, the fault could not be fixed and they had to replace the pump with a new one.
This ponding coincided with a previous problem, the blocking of the internal sanitation network of the market, whose first indication dates back to January 9, as explained by the Councilor for Mobility and President of EPASSA, Estefanía Plaza. The clogging of the pipes caused the water to revolve and rise until it exited through the market toilets, connected to said network.
The cause according to the technicians is a progressive clogging of pipes due to waste from market stalls, like fish and meat scraps, clams, shells and more. Hence, the City Council has ordered the company in charge of maintaining the market, Fecada, to seal these sinks or the replacement of the grids of the same, to avoid obstructions and facilitate the work of maintenance and removal of remains. “The company that has the maintenance concession will proceed together with the municipal technicians in the next few days to make these arrangements so that the parking lot is no longer flooded, if this system is valid,” said the mayor.
They have also placed a retention valve to prevent wastewater from re-plastering and going out through the toilets, and will install manholes for easier access to the sewerage network in case of new plugs or breakdowns, in order to solve them more easily. This internal sanitation network runs through the entire market and ends in the basement of the underground car park, where it surrounds it with large pipes next to the walls.
Above the ‘parking lot’, the municipal food market opens signs with its name in its four accesses and the motto ‘El mercado de Jaén’ on the side facing Joaquín Tenorio street, next to the entrance to the docks. The Councilor for Economic Promotion, Consumption and Markets, María Cantos, points out in this regard that a market with century and a half of history it didn’t have his name on any sign. With this, they also meet a request from the industrialists themselves. «It is a gesture that wants to recognize the importance of this traditional fish market, which, located in the heart of the city, offers an extraordinary service and has demonstrated a adaptability to the times that it must be an example for all the commerce ”, has declared this Wednesday. “We must not forget that it is one of the oldest markets in Spain, an institution in Jaén now,” he added.
The mayor has also pointed out that both the market and the ‘parking lot’ are widely used daily. “It is one more claim so that those who still do not know it, are clear that they have at hand a selection of traditional shops, of the highest quality, in the municipal market of San Francisco”, he said. The events planned to celebrate the century and a half have been suspended, although the mayor trusts that throughout this year they can retake them.
