Celtic are ‘an option’ for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson in January, months after a trade to Aston Villa was ‘almost agreed’, according to 90min.

Henderson remained at United, where he has played just three times this season, while Villa spent a lot on Arsenal’s Emiliano Martínez.

Celtic also strengthened their options between the clubs, incorporating Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens.

But it could be argued that Barkas has yet to fully convince at Celtic Park.

England coach Gareth Southgate is alleged to have told Henderson that he cannot be number one in the European Championship next summer if he does not play first-team football regularly.

And so the 23-year-old is said to be ‘desperate to leave’ when the transfer window reopens, with his representatives ‘actively working’ to find him a new team.

With Aston Villa seemingly ruled out, likewise Henderson’s former loan club Sheffield United, it is suggested that a move abroad or to Scotland could be on the cards.

And the website adds that Manchester United can sanction an 18-month deal.

However, given Henderson’s new wages are rumored to be around £ 100,000 a week, Celtic will likely require some subsidy from United.

Henderson has been a regular on recent Southgate teams and made his full England debut against Ireland on Thursday, alongside Aston Villa players Tyrone Mings and Jack Grealish.
