When we have still known few of the high-end proposals for 2021 in mobile phones, Huawei keeps its word and presents its new folding device. Its about Huawei Mate X2, the direct heir to the Huawei Mate Xs, but as we saw it comes with changes.
It is, again, of the fusion of a tablet and a mobile, but in this case the opening happens in a different way and closer to what we saw in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. The hinge mechanism has been renewed and among other components the cameras and the processor have been updated, which as fit thinking is the Kirin 9000. Let’s see what else this new device with a folding screen brings.

6.45 to 8 inches in one gesture
Something that draws attention at first is the profile of the new Mate X2 if we see it from its upper side. Unlike the foldable devices we’ve seen so far, this profile is asymmetric when it is unfolded, so that the side of the cameras is the thickest point, and it tapers in thickness to the other extreme.
In this way, when it is folded it remains equal (seen as a block), since the thicknesses of one side and the other are compensated (as when dividing a rectangle into two triangles, in this case scalenes). In total we see two screens, a larger internal one and an external one with a smaller diagonal in the middle where the cameras are not, as we said very much in the style of the Z Fold 2.
In this way, they promise that it will be comfortable to hold, especially when folded, although it weighs slightly less than 300 grams. Specifically, they are 295 grams, 5 grams less than the Mate Xs and 13 grams more than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.
Speaking of screens, what we see is one 6.45-inch external OLED and one 8-inch external OLED. In both cases they reach 90 hertz talking about the refresh rate, seeing differences in resolution, pixel density and tactile sampling rate:
- 6.45-inch OLED: 2,700 x 1,160 pixel resolution, 456 pixels per inch density, and 240 Hz sampling rate.
- 8-inch OLED: resolution of 2,480 x 2,200 pixels, density of 413 pixels per inch and sampling frequency of 180 Hz.
55-watt fast charging and the latest processor in the house
As we said in the introduction, at the heart of this mobile we see the Kirin 9000, Huawei’s latest high-end processor with eight cores and dual NPUs that we already saw in the Huawei Mate 40 Pro. There are two versions in terms of storage memory, leaving two models: 8 GB + 256 GB or 8 GB + 512 GB. In both cases you can add an NM card with up to 256 GB of RAM to expand the storage.
At the level of drums, the new folding includes a 4,500 mAh battery with fast charging of up to 55W and without wireless charging. In terms of connectivity, the Mate X2 supports 5G SA / NSA in the main SIM, remaining in 4G in terms of its secondary SIM, also having WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, USB type C 3.1 and a side fingerprint reader.
It comes with Android still (no HarmonyOS) under EMUI 11, it has NFC and stereo speakers, but it does not have a 3.5 mm minijack. Of course, they have taken care of clarifying both in the presentation and in the subsequent unboxing that in this case the charger is included.
Double telephoto lens and double stabilization, “Pro +”
The game that folding devices with this format give sometimes allows cameras to be placed on one side or on several, and in this case we see both rear and front cameras. The rear is arranged in a module with the design that we usually see today for a quad rear camera, while the front pokes out through a hole in the external screen. This is the composition:
- Main camera: 50 megapixel sensor with lens with aperture f / 1.9, focal length of 23 millimeters and with optical stabilization (OIS).
- Wide angle: 16 megapixel sensor with lens with 17 mm focal length and f / 2.2 aperture.
- Telephoto lens with 8 megapixel sensor with f / 4.4 aperture lens, 240 mm focal length and 10x optical zoom.
- Telephoto lens with 12 megapixel sensor with f / 2.4 aperture lens and OIS, offering 3X optical zoom (70 mm).
- Front camera with 16 megapixel sensor and lens with f / 2.2 aperture.
As has been tradition, the signature of Leica stays on the lenses as well as slow motion at 960 frames per second in FullHD resolution. It is interesting that they have made the most risky bet we have seen in the Huawei P40 Pro +, with that double telephoto lens, so that it can compete somewhat more directly with the more powerful competition (although they have not included 8K recording).
Versions and prices of the Huawei Mate X2
At the moment the new folding has been presented in China and we know the prices for this market:
- Huawei Mate X2 8/256 GB: 17,999 yuan, about 2,294 euros to change
- Huawei Mate X2 8/512 GB: 18,999 yuan, about 2,422 euros to change
This time there is even four colors: pink, blue, white and black. We will be awaiting the details in case the Mate X2 reaches more markets, especially Spain.
