Chelsea insists that Petr Cech's new career in hockey will not affect his role in the club, and he will only play for Guildford Phoenix if his schedule allows.

The former Czech international announced on Wednesday that he would exchange football boots for skates and align himself with the Phoenix at the gate. His debut will be on Sunday.

But Cech has already played a role as technical advisor and performance consultant at Chelsea since leaving the game, and the club says his hockey dream will be secondary.

'[Cech] will serve as goalkeeper for Guildford Phoenix, which is near his home, "Chelsea said on his website.

"If his schedule allows for the Chelsea Football Club, he is ready to help them with their league games."

Cech, who played a lot of ice hockey in his childhood before starting his football career, will be on duty on Sunday visiting Swindon Wildcats 2 at Guildford.

Commenting on his move to the rink, he said, "I am delighted to have the opportunity to play with the Phoenix to get the match experience.

"I hope I can help this young team achieve their season goals and try to win as many games as possible when I have the chance to play.

"After 20 years of professional football, this will be a wonderful experience for me to play the game I liked to see and play as a kid."

Phoenix head coach Andy Hemmings added, "Petr's commitment is huge for the Phoenix, he's a great guy who trains hard and I can not wait to see him on his debut."
