China opened its doors to Turkey’s poultry sector

Turkish exports of poultry and poultry products to China, which started earlier this month as a result of long-term mutual negotiations, will provide $ 20 million in added value annually to the national economy.

“It is an important development that China, one of the world’s leading importers … of poultry meat, is opening its doors to the Turkish poultry industry,” Agriculture and Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli said in a statement after China will start receiving the Turkish products.

Turkey is among the top poultry producers in the world. The country exports poultry meat to 73 countries, including Iraq, Georgia, Japan and Russia.

“In 2019, we exported $ 613 million (TL 5.07 billion) in meat and poultry products and we aim to further increase this in the next period,” said Pakdemirli.

The exports came after lengthy discussions and meetings between the two countries, the minister said, adding that they agreed on a draft protocol on the inspection, quarantine and veterinary health conditions of poultry that can be exported from Turkey to China.

A model veterinary health certificate was drawn up and information on 38 companies with export requests from the country was shared with Chinese authorities, the statement added. Following the agreement, the export of meat and poultry products could start from October 15.

Efforts to increase the number of poultry exporting companies will be intensified, Pakdemirli added.

The president of the Turkish Association of Poultry Meat Producers and Breeders (BESD-BIR), Naci Kaplan, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that previously there were indirect exports from the sector; however, they are now being carried out directly with the bilateral agreements concluded between the two countries.

Kaplan, who said that local producers who make world-class products meticulously following food safety rules once again proved their worth, noted that exports to China came after the sector opened to the Japanese market. He said they will increase exports to existing markets while continuing to seek new market options.

Saying that the exports came after lengthy discussions and meetings between the two countries that took almost 10 years, Kaplan said that the profiles of around 38 Turkish companies that applied to export poultry products to China were transmitted to the country, and the company, Gedik Piliç, was selected to carry out the first exports.

He said the other firms are now going through an audit process.

The sector’s priority export product to China is chicken feet, Kaplan said, as the country is the number one consumer of this part of poultry. He added that one of the reasons chicken feet are widely consumed and preferred in China is because they are affordable. In the next period, local producers will also send other types of poultry products, he said.

Kaplan said Turkey exports about 52,000 tonnes of chicken feet to China annually through indirect means. He said the added value of direct exports will increase once related transportation costs are reduced. “In other words, the revenue of $ 45 million to $ 50 million from this export will reach $ 70 million,” Kaplan said.
