The mayor of Barcelona, Ada Colau, asked this Tuesday by letter to the president of Endesa, Juan Sánchez-Calero, and the Minister of Business and Knowledge of the Generalitat, Ramon Tremosa, an “urgent” response to the supply cuts that occur since November in Barcelona (in neighborhoods such as Raval, Torre Baró or Trinitat) and in its metropolitan area.
In the letters, the mayor asks Sánchez-Calero for a meeting “as soon as possible in order to know first-hand what solutions he proposes in the short and medium term to immediately solve this situation.” Colau has also written a third letter to the Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, whom he asks for her support to demand the necessary investments from the company.
The Councilor for Climatic Emergency of the City Council, Eloi Badia, lamented the consequences of some cuts that reach eight hours and that affect residents in the middle of winter, but also merchants. “This occurs in the coldest week in a long time and with the most expensive electricity rates in Europe,” he said, adding: “Those who have the highest historical profits at the same time leave thousands of people without electricity in Barcelona and the whole country”. Badia regretted not knowing how many are affected by the cuts, because the figures that the consistory has has been obtained by the neighbors and not by Endesa.
The councilor demanded that the company “size the infrastructures according to the needs of the neighborhoods” and recalled that on the bill, the subscribers pay a little for the improvement of the infrastructures. “It is a matter more of will than economic”, he assured and also urged Endesa to compensate “ex officio, because it knows who has suffered” the subscribers affected by power outages. The councilor said that the City Council is considering taking legal action.
Endesa sources assured that the electricity grid in Catalonia is in “good condition and dimensioned” to meet customer demand. The same sources added that “periodic inspection, maintenance and review of the electrical network are carried out in accordance with the established regulations.”
