Opening fixture Alex Lees matched his second championship season of the season when he set Sussex a big 437 victory goal on the third day in Hove.

Lees hit 143, including two sixes and 14 fours, and bet 220 for the second wicket with Gareth Harte making 77.

Durham finished the first innings of Sussex at 232 with the second ball of the day and announced with 284-3.

The home team were soon 4-2 and later lost Will Beer for 36 to reach stalemates 59: 3, with 378 more needed to win.

Luke Wells crashed in the first round for the second time in this game, was caught by Chris Rushworth on the third slip-up, and Harry Finch also hit duck when he counterattacked the Durham sailor.

Beer and Stiaan van Zyl managed to get through 24 overs and add 55, but Rushworth (3-11) had the former lbw in the penultimate game.

Previously, Brydon Carse had rewarded Delray Rawlins (56) for the best numbers of the 5-43 career to finish Sussex's first innings, and Lees then took 183 balls to reach his hundred.

He fought for nearly five hours, before he finally pushed a ball from Beinspinner Beer to the wicketkeeper.
