ELIZABETHTON, Tennessee (WVLT / AP) – Dale Earnhardt Jr. was rushed to hospital after his plane crashed in eastern Tennessee.

Kelley Earnhardt Miller, analyst for the NASCAR television channel and former driver's sister, tweeted that "everyone is safe and has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation".

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration said that a Cessna Citation had left the runway and caught fire after landing at the Elizabethton Municipal Airport at 3:40 pm. Thursday. FAA officials said the first indications were that two pilots and three passengers were on board.

The Carter County Sheriff's Office spokesman, Thomas Gray, confirmed that Earnhardt was on board, while claiming that he was not one of the pilots.

Earnhardt retired as a full-time rider in 2017 and worked as an analyst for NBC. He is part of the broadcast crew scheduled for the Saturday night series series in Bristol, Tennessee.
