Declan Rice has launched a passionate defense of his friend and England teammate Mason Mount amid recent criticism of Chelsea’s playmaker.
With Gareth Southgate seemingly unsure about a regular spot in England for Jack Grealish in shape, he has often chosen Mount over the captain of Aston Villa.
Mount and Rice are good friends from their Chelsea academy days
It has sparked a backlash on social media, with fans calling the Chelsea midfielder, who is also a regular on Frank Lampard’s side, a ‘teacher’s pet’.
However, the midfielder pair began England’s 3-0 win over Ireland earlier this week and after the win, Grealish responded to Mount’s ‘annoying’ criticism, saying he doesn’t even believe the two are competing for the same position.
And West Ham midfielder Rice has echoed those sentiments, insisting that his former Chelsea academy teammate would be an asset to any Premier League team, as well as England.
Rice said: “We don’t talk about it, but it’s very tough.

“I know what your mentality is like. I know how motivated you are. No wonder Gareth picks it up, Frank [Lampard] He chooses him and if he gives every Premier League coach the opportunity, they would choose him too.
“If you look at Jack and Mase, there will always be comparisons, but they are playing in two different parts of the field.
“Mason now in Chelsea is playing as an attacking eight and Jack is playing down the left. [at Villa] and we saw the other night that both can play in the same team and both are great players that we should value ”.
