The first novel by a former student of Tiverton has been selected to receive a prestigious American award for excellence in independently published books.
Katie Ward's novel, "The Pretender," won the coveted BRAG Medallion (Reader Appreciation Group) Award after a rigorous review process on the quality of the plot, the writing style, the characterization, coverage, dialogue and copying, to name just a few. The ten members of the reading committee were then asked to unanimously agree that the prize be awarded. Only a fraction of the books submitted are eligible to receive the prize.
On the subject of her work, former East Devon College and Mid Devon Gazette internship student said, "I am delighted that my first novel, The Pretender, has received the B.R.A.G Medallion Award. It is one of the most prestigious quality awards that an independent author can receive. So, the fact that he has achieved excellent results in all areas is incredible. The quality of my book has always been of paramount importance to me and receiving an award that recognizes that I realized exactly what I wanted to do. "
Originally planned as a journalist, Katie earned a degree in journalism from the Farnham University of Creative Arts. After completing her university studies, Katie decided to move to Dublin, where she participated in RTE's Seoige and O'Shea contest.
The story presented was one that Katie had originally written at the age of 14 when she had been inspired by an article in her favorite teen magazine. Katie's story was selected for publication in an anthology entitled "Do the Write Thing" and was ranked in the Irish bestseller list. A few months after that, Katie was also selected for a contest organized by Metro Eireann and judged by Roddy Doyle, winner of the MAN Booker Award, which she had the chance to meet.
Katie returned to Devon in 2007 and now lives in the suburbs of Exeter.
All books with the B.R.A.G medallion sticker guarantee a guaranteed quality of reading, which guarantees consumers that these books are worth both their time and their money.
