Fatality rate due to Covid-19 is higher in public hospitals in Mexico than in private ones: INSP

The Center for Research in Nutrition and Health (CINyS) of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) presented a study showing that the fatality rate (CFR, in English) by cases of Covid-19 in Mexico it is higher in public health institutions than in the private ones.

According to the document published on the International Epidemiology Association (IEA, for its acronym in English), the fatality rate of those infected with the coronavirus in public institutions it is 18.9% of every 100 people, while in private it is 4.6%.

To reach the results obtained the CINyS studied Mexican adults over the age of 20 who tested positive for Covid-19 for a period between February 28 and July 31, 2020.

In Mexico, the fatality rate by Covid-19 is associated with chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. In our country, most of those infected with the virus SARS-Cov-2 who suffered from some comorbidity had a higher risk of complications at the beginning of hospitalization, according to the study.

However, in our country the contrasting social levels are also another of the main differentiators when measuring the CFR of the cases of coronavirus. If the user served had formal employment or not, poverty levels, as well as the ages of the beneficiaries, are some of the data taken into account.

In addition, other elements that make the difference between patients treated in public hospitals compared to private ones is due to what the study indicates as the “limited” material and personnel infrastructure that the hospitals have. local public institutions.

The study did not specify which private health entities were taken into account for its analysis.

While public institutions are: the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR), the Secretariat of Health (SS), the Red Cross, clinics of the National System for the integral development of the family (DIF), Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), the State Health Secretariats, Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), the Institute of Social Security and Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS).
