FC Barcelona – La Liga Believes the Argentine could stay with Barcelona
Joan Laporta is hopeful that his presidential candidacy will be successful in 2021 and that he will be able to tempt Lionel Messi to stay at Barcelona, yet the former president has made clear that the Argentine is going to receive offers from clubs that have far deeper pockets that the Catalan giants.
Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain have been the teams closest linked to Messi, yet Laporta believes Barcelona will have a sporting advantage over the two fiscal powerhouses.
“It won’t be easy because he’s receiving offers from clubs that don’t lack money, because they have either a tycoon or a state behind them,” Laporta explained in a campaign speech on Friday.
“Messi is very comfortable here, I’m convinced.
“From what I know of him, he wants to stay. He loves Barcelona and I enjoy the honesty he has always spoken to me with.”
Ronald Koeman wasn’t able to make any January signings, despite his longstanding interest in both Memphis Depay and Eric Garcia, yet Laporta is refusing to discuss such matters until he is president.
“I have to maintain consistency,” he added.
“All the agents have called me, but if a name came up then it would raise the price and I don’t want to destabilise the club in the middle of the season.
“We must motivate our players and Koeman to the maximum. I want to start winning titles.”
