The firefighters were called up at 19:40 GMT at the Northampton Museum

A fire has broken out in a museum that is currently closed for renovations.

The emergency service was called at the Northampton Museum after 7.40 GMT smoke came out of the property on Guildhall Road.

Firefighters entered the building to attack the second-floor fire, which was said to be debris and had gone through the floor.

The museum was closed in February 2017 due to a "major new expansion project" and should be reopened early next year.

The Northampton Fire & Rescue Service recommends that drivers avoid terrain due to roadblocks.

Residents should also keep windows and doors closed.
