This week, Food Lion will be rebuilding 105 stores in the greater Norfolk, Virginia area.

The supermarket chain Ahold Delhaize USA has announced that on Wednesday, August 29th, major reopening events will be held in all stores. Each venue is scheduled to be open to the public after a ceremony to cut the tapes and the first 100 customers at 8am in the queue to receive a free tote bag plus a "secret" gift card valued at $ 10 to $ 200.

In early May, Food Lion announced a $ 168 million investment plan to improve the shopping experience in Norfolk stores. In addition to the refurbishment, the program included the hiring of 4,000 additional employees and community deployments, including a donation of nearly $ 200,000 to local food banks for the purchase of two mobile dining carts.

"Food Lion has been feeding the large Norfolk community for nearly 40 years and we are pleased to bring these improvements to our 105 local stores," Food Lion President Meg Ham said in a statement. "We've created a new shopping experience by investing heavily in our businesses, customers, employees and communities."

On the convenience side, the changes include new signage and groupings of similar products that, according to Food Lion, allow customers to find items faster. A more efficient checkout process should also make getting in and out easier.

The stores will also offer an expanded variety and assortment in all departments, including more local products in the "Local Goodness" section; an expanded variety of craft beer; Wines with limited reserves; and more natural, organic and gluten-free items. The larger perishable offering includes a wider selection of beef, salads, fruits and other products.

For families, the refurbished stores offer a wider range of simple and affordable meals, such as hand-sliced ​​chicken, along with a wider selection of "griss-and-go" gifts and ready-made deli meats and cheeses, freshly cut every day Will be available to customers to queue without waiting, Food Lion said.

Twelve of the stores will house walk-in garden coolers to keep the produce fresh longer, and six stores have expanded deli departments offering handmade craft pizza and world-class coffee.

More than 40 of Norfolk's stores also include a wing bar assortment for customers looking for warm, fast meal solutions, Food Lion added.

Food Lion said 649 of its 1,030 stores have been rebuilt in the last four years with the completion of market enhancements in Norfolk. Headquartered in Salisbury, NC, with operations in 10 Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern states, the chain plans to restructure additional stores in other markets.
