An exciting day of matches culminated in the Europa League for the first leg of the quarterfinals. Manchester United achieved an important victory in Spain against Granada by 2-0, Arsenal suffered a surprise draw in England against Slavia Prague by 1-1, Villarreal won a great 1-0 win in Croatia against Dinamo Zagreb Y Roma did the same before Ajax in Amsterdam, tracing the match 2-1.
Victoria de Manchester United
Granada suffered a painful 2-0 defeat in Spain against Manchester United with goals from Marcus Rashford (31 ‘) and Bruno Fernandes (90’) from a penalty. The ‘Red Devils’, 2nd in the Premier League, took a good lead for the return leg at Old Trafford on Thursday next week. For its part, Granada, 9th in the Spanish LaLiga, now needs a great comeback if it wants to celebrate another historic milestone in its debut season in European competitions (it had just eliminated Napoli and Mölde).
Surprise in London
For their part, Arsenal drew a bitter-tasting draw at London’s Emirates Stadium against Czech Slavia Prague. The ‘Gunners’ found a goal from the Ivorian Nicolas Pepé at the end of the match at 86 minutes, but in 94′ a somewhat agonizing head from Tomas Holes (bad response from Bernd Leno) put the final 1-1 that complicated the series for the English. Now Mikel Arteta’s team will have to achieve a good result next Thursday in the Czech Republic.
The ‘Yellow Submarine’ keeps moving
In Croatia, Villarreal produced a great result in the first leg of the quarterfinals against Dinamo Zagreb, winning with a goal from Gerard Moreno on the brink of the penalty break (44 ‘). The ‘Yellow Submarine’, sixth in the Spanish LaLiga, maintains a practically perfect path this season in the Europa League. They got through the group stage as the leader, with five wins and a draw in six rounds. In the round of 32 they won both of their games, against Salzburg, and repeated with two wins, in the round trip, in the round of 16 against Dynamo Kiev. The return of this key will be on Thursday 15 in Spain.
Rome gave it back to Ajax in Amsterdam
Lastly, in the Netherlands, Ajax suffered a tough 2-1 defeat by Italian Roma. The Dutch team began winning with a goal from Davy Klaassen (39 ‘) after a mistake by Amadou Diawara and an assist from Dusan Tadic. Later Tadic missed a penalty that could have made it 2-0 but was saved by goalkeeper Pau López. Lorenzo Pellegrini put the equalizer from a free kick at 57 ‘after a weak response from goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen and on 87’ the Brazilian-Uruguayan Roger Ibañez put the final 2-1. The return will be on Thursday 15 in Italy.
