Paris St Germain will have to wait to claim the title of Ligue 1 after a modest 5-1 defeat to second-placed Lille on Sunday.
The goals of Nicolas Pepe, Jonathan Bamba, Gabriel and Jose Fonte in the second half saw Lille suffer a painful defeat against PSG. Juan Bernat was sent off in the 37th minute after injuring Thiago Silva and Thomas Meunier.
Kylian Mbappe had scored two goals offside in the first half, leaving Lille with a Meunier own-goal before Bernat answered.
The eighth PSG title in Ligue 1 remains a matter of urgency, but after their 2-0 draw with Strasbourg last week, they now have a chance to confirm their chances on consecutive Sundays.
The Parisians were of the opinion that they had taken an early lead when Mbappe hit Meunier's cross, but the goal was denied offside and a few moments later it was Lille who went ahead.
On their first real attack, Jonathan Ikone came down from the right, and Meunier accidentally turned him into his own net.
PSG took four minutes to respond as Mbappe controlled a bouncing ball and hovered over an endless cross to finish Bernat.
They thought they had shot it a few minutes later, when Mbappe had the ball in the net and came just past Mike Maignan after switching on the afterburners to escape the Lille defense.
The assistant's flag had stayed down, but the video assistant's assistant referee intervened and directed Mbappe's decision as he picked up the ball right in the Lille half.
PSG's problems started to rise when they first lost Silva and then Meunier through injury. The biggest blow for Thomas Tuchel's plan, however, was eight minutes before the break when Bernat was taken away for a tug on Pepe.
It looked soft – with the contact certainly not enough to send the Lille man to the ground – but with Pepe through the gate, the referee held his decision in consultation with VAR.
Five minutes after the break, Lille struck the counterattack. Pepe slipped under Areola after Icon split the PSG defense.
More opportunities came when the game opened. A lack of power cost Bamba a goal when he beat Areola just to see Thilo Kehrer, who conceded the ball close to the line. Therefore, he made sure that was not a problem in the 65th minute when he shot the ball past the keeper at his near post after breaking the offside trap.
PSG lost sight and were penalized in the 71st minute when Gabriel steered Pepe's free-kick for his first goal in Ligue 1.
Pepe was denied by Areola before Dani Alves made a decisive move when Loic Remy scored the goal, but it would be even worse for the champions as ex-Southampton defender Fonte scored a fifth goal in the corner of Pepe.
Elsewhere, Saint-Etienne Lyon and Marseille kept the pressure on third place with a 3-0 home victory Bordeaux.
Sixth place Montpellier beat Toulouse 2-1 and Rennes are tenth after a 0-0 draw with eighth place Kind.
