How the rogue class, PvP and open world work in Diablo 4

With BlizzConline (aka BlizzCon 2021) underway, we got several new details about Diablo 4. During a presentation, Blizzard revealed the new Rogue class, outlined how PvP works, and teased new elements of its open world design. Here, we summarize everything we learned; You can also see the full presentation below.

Rogue class breakdown

Rogue is a dexterity-based class that can use bows and crossbows for ranged attacks, and swords and daggers for melee attacks. The class is all about mobility and quick hitting, but it also has a diverse skill set with abilities that you can mix and match to great effect. From what we can gather, rogues have abilities like a swift ability, quick slashes, and an air strike that shoots down arrows to damage AOE. Rogues have three specializations. One is called Combo Points, which seems to depend on a sequence of time-based attacks that accumulate damage; director Luis Barriga compared it to a kind of rhythm game. The second is called the Shadow Realm, which puts you in temporary stealth to attack unharmed while in the middle of combat. Lastly, Exploit Weakness is a reaction-based specialization where an icon will appear on an enemy and you’ll have to time a counter to deal additional damage. Players do not have to choose a specialization and can combine skills to create their own builds and playstyles. As a rogue, you can also temporarily add elemental properties (frost, shadow, and poison) to your attacks in what is called the imbue system. . Imbue also extends to all rogue attacks and abilities. These can also work in conjunction with other players; For example, frost damage eventually freezes enemies, and frost-infusing rogues can be frozen faster with a wizard’s blizzard spells.

How Diablo 4 PvP Works

Player versus player is back in Diablo 4, but there weren’t many details when it was first announced. Now we know how it works. There are specific areas in the Sanctuary open world called Field of Hatred where PvP is enabled and players can attack each other. You will face strong AI-controlled enemies in these areas to collect Hate Shards, but you must purify them to exchange them for unique gear. To purify shards of hatred, you must bring them to a certain part of the area and survive through waves of enemies for a certain period of time. However, other players around the area will be alerted to your presence and may stop to fight you and take the shards for themselves. It’s kind of like the Dark Zone in The Division. As a callback to Diablo 2’s PvP, defeating real players will reward you with their ears. For now, it’s only planned as a collectible for battles you win, but it can be turned into a form of currency later.

Fortresses and mounts in the open world

We knew that the Sanctuary version of Diablo 4 was going to be a continuous open world with public events occurring sporadically. Now we know that there will also be a thing called Strongholds, which are enemy camps that you can raid and clear to take for yourself. They can become central areas with shops. We saw a bit of the horse mount in the previous game, but Blizzard discussed how the mounts work. They help you travel faster, but they are not a combat item. You can do special attacks while dismounting, but that’s about it. If you get hit while riding a horse, you will have to dismount. Various mounts will be able to be unlocked throughout the game – in a previous developer update, Blizzard went into more detail on the Sanctuary design this time, so be sure to read up on how Diablo 4’s open world works.
