Howler against childhood Liverpool or earning the ‘Glasgow keys’ by defeating the Rangers? Celtic hero John Hartson chooses his greatest goal

It’s a great question. You have scored more than 200 goals in your career, but which one did you enjoy the most?

Celtic hero John Hartson has scored many specials as well. Great European nights, Old Firm derbies, Scottish Cup finals… he’s scored in all of them.

Hartson will always be written in Celtic folklore

Like Alan Shearer, the Welshman was one of those forwards who could score from anywhere. He was not a tap-in dealer.

Speaking about the art of scoring goals and many other things, Hartson is the subject of the latest episode of our Up Front With series, which it can be heard in its entirety on Saturday at 8 pm on Ezanime.

While it’s no wonder his favorite goal came in a Celtic jersey, it may surprise fans that it wasn’t scored at Parkhead… or even Ibrox!

In fact, it was at Anfield, against the club that Hartson supported as a child, on a big European night in 2003. It’s fair.

“My favorite goal was a peach against Liverpool in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals,” Hartson told Ezanime.

“We were 1-1 from the first leg at Celtic Park; Emile Heskey and Henrik Larsson had scored.

“So we went to Anfield the following Thursday knowing we had to score.

“I got the second he closed the game. It was from about 30 meters after a double with the magical Henrik Larsson, around Sami Hyypia.

“They were the club that I supported as a child and I am still watching their results, mainly thanks to Ian Rush. It was my icon when I grew up in Wales.

“I remember walking off the pitch and the Liverpool fans stayed behind and applauded us.”

Nonetheless, Hartson, of course, has fond memories of playing the Rangers, having scored nine times against famous Celtic rivals.

The 45-year-old remembers being the most popular man in town every time he takes the winner in the Old Firm derby.

Well … in the middle of Glasgow, at least.

“I knew the volume and size of Celtic, but no one can prepare you for that,” he added. “Two or three thousand fans showed up the day I signed!

“I scored nine against Rangers and scored the winning goal in four straight games. The first was just amazing.

“You want to score for Celtic. And he wants to mark his rivals in the derby.

“I had the keys to half the city in one stage!”
