His passion for natural phenomena and science fiction led Abimael Salas Garza to be considered an icon of meteorology in Nuevo León, with his more than 30 years of experience.
He assures that his career has left him a great deal of teachings, achievements and above all the personal satisfaction of doing what he loves the most.
At 48 years old, the head of Meteorology at Multimedios and MILENIO shares that he is a person who is 100 percent fond of astrophysics, science fiction, electronic music, video games and natural sciences.
Abimael, as he is tutored by many people, is married and enjoys his two small children, whom together with his wife he considers as his main driving force, and despite the fact that his profession is very absorbing, he always seeks to be with them as long as possible. .
Since he was a child, he knew that meteorology was his thing and by chance of fate he had to do his social service on TV Nuevo León; He relates that years later, he managed to form a strong bond with the meteorologist Miguel Ángel Vidal, who in 1998 gave him his first opportunity to venture fully into the world of weather forecasting.
Although he does not like being on television, Salas enjoys his activity, especially working behind the scenes forecasting and investigating.
Since 1988 he has managed to work closely with natural phenomena that have impacted and have become the history of Nuevo León, however, his most longed-for dream is to live the direct experience of being in the place where the phenomenon occurs.
Since when did you become interested in meteorology?
Notice that there are those who say that there are people who are born to dedicate themselves to something. My taste for the atmosphere has been since I can remember, since I was a child, but it is not only a taste, it is practically a passion for it, since I was 7 or 8 years old I spent hours observing the rain, the clouds.
My hobby was so great that I omitted to play to be able to observe how the clouds moved, so you can practically say that I was born to be a meteorologist, that is my great passion.
How did you get to Multimedios?
Always hand in hand with my teacher Miguel Ángel Vidal, that’s how we got here. First as an assistant meteorologist, in order to make forecasts and later, it was in 1998 that I finally came out to work in this company.
How does it feel that people regard you as a weather icon?
I feel very proud, satisfied, because without a doubt I managed to continue with the work and the legacy left by the maestro Miguel Ángel Vidal; earning the trust of the listener, the viewer, the readers is the most complicated thing, earning the trust of thousands of people during all this time is my greatest satisfaction.
You pointed out that your family is the most important thing, how have you managed to maintain a balance between it and your profession?
Yes, this profession is very absorbing, a balance is complicated. The fact that I was married at an older age reflects precisely that. When we talk about meteorology we are talking about an activity that requires a lot of time, it is absorbent, if we add the media to that, it becomes three times as absorbent.
I think that’s why it took me many years to have the time to lead a personal life.
You were telling us that you like video games, which genre do you prefer?
I like more space simulators, science fiction, especially spaceships are the games that I like the most. Also some first person or strategy, but what I like the most and have enjoyed are science fiction games like Freelancer, Freespace Y Starlancer.
Do you have a favorite movie or series?
My favorite genre is science fiction, the whole saga of Star Wars, Alien and countless there are. Also as a child I liked paleontology a lot, obviously I also like Jurassic Park; I like to watch the zombie series, Star Trek Y Battlestar Galactica.
What is your favorite food?
I am very open to dishes, but I really like dishes that have pork meat, pork roast or meat roll, they are my favorites, but more, more, more, the pork roast.
What kind of music do you like to listen to the most?
Electronic music, music trance and the house. My favorite exponents are Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto, among others. There is a great variety.
What still needs to be done in meteorology?
I like being at the scene a lot, I’ve never done that, it’s something that I lack.
