If it had to be painted as a metaphor, the European Union would be a continental-sized negotiating table. Of those seated at that table, of course, those who negotiate in their mother tongue have a subtle advantage, since nothing is more difficult than to count (or swear) well in a language learned later. After Brexit, France has redoubled its efforts to make French gain weight as the working language that it is in the EU, along with hegemonic English and German, less widespread and studied.
