Jose Mourinho did not support Fred's commitment but reportedly felt Manchester United's transfer team would not hire a new midfielder if vetoed.

The Brazilian has struggled since leaving Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2018, worth 52 million pounds. Mourinho and his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had limited opportunities for the first team.

In the last six Premier League games of Mourinho's term, Fred played only once – 17 minutes against Fulham – while he has played under Solskjaer only eight league games.

Scott McTominay and Andreas Pereira have been preferred to Fred and he has only made one start in the Premier League this season when he was beaten 1-0 away to Newcastle last Sunday.

United's decision to spend so much on Fred was heavily criticized, though The Athletic's claim, Mourinho, did not want him at all.

The Portuguese coach faced a frustrating change window this summer, denied the center-half commitment he had set and left only Fred, Diogo Dalot and substitute Lee Grant behind.

Although Mourinho had the authority to veto the signing of the contract, he felt he lacked backing in the club hierarchy and only agreed with Fred because he thought he would not get a new midfielder if he turned his back on the Brazilian ,

The athleticThe report also alleges that at the end of the 2017/18 season Mourinho suddenly considered a number of pre-agreed goals, partly explaining the lack of backing.

Fred did not manage to pull up trees under Solskjaer, as the Norwegian midfielder said in the summer: "Well, I think you're not surprised if a player who plays in Ukraine has a bit of a hard time in the beginning." But we know that talent is there.

"We saw towards the end [last] Season, what Fred can give us: the PSG game, the Arsenal and the Man City game. And of course he's one of those we hope will take him another step this season. Hopefully 10 days of our preseason will be missing [to get married] will not throw him back too much. "
