Jurgen Klopp is expected to withdraw Liverpool’s transfer move to midfielder Bayern Munich and Spain Thiago, according to Rossi legend Steve Nicol.
Thiago, 29, has been closely linked with a move to Anfield, with Bayern confirming that he may be leaving the German giants this summer.
The Spaniard spent seven years at the Allianz Arena, playing over 200 games and helping the club win seven Bundesliga titles.
Thiago is said to be looking to relocate this summer and find a new challenge in another club, with Liverpool reportedly leading the row to secure his signature.
But Reds’ hero Nicol warned his former club against Thiago’s signature, arguing that the Spanish national team would not make Klopp’s title-winning team stronger.
“The boy is a quality player, no doubt about it,” Nicol told ESPN.
‘The ball can pass and what Liverpool could possibly improve is having that midfielder, a bit like Xabi Alonso, choose the players.
‘But the truth is, it would mean that you’re changing your style a bit. So I wonder if it’s a chance to sign a great player and keep the team strong, because if there’s one thing that Liverpool has its competition in the middle of the park.
‘Yes, he’s a great player, but I’m not sure if he improves the team.
‘Do you really want to touch something that’s not broken? Liverpool are very dynamic and Thiago is more of an old school footballer.
‘He is a great player and you need a team, but is he pushing the starting XI? I don’t think so.
Asked where Klopp should try to strengthen his team this summer, the former Liverpool star added: ‘Can they find anyone else alongside Virgil van Dijk?
Joe Gomez was great, but that could be his limit. If I were to be demanding and greedy, I would like to have another Van Dijk next to Van Dijk. “
