  • “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” has no official start date yet. The new cut version of “Justice League” from 2017 should be released in 2021 on the US streaming service HBO Max.
  • New scenes with the main actors and supporting actors were filmed. In the new version of “Justice League” there should also be an appearance of Jared Leto as Joker.

Shortly after “Justice League” hit theaters in 2017, bitter indignation erupted and the film did not satisfy fans. Soon many people asked for the “Snyder Cut” to be published. This means the cut version of the director Zack Snyder, who left the DC superhero project halfway.

Numerous petitions and a lot of media attention, which even Marvel can get crooked, make the dream a reality: HBO Max publishes “Zack Snyder’s Justice League”!

Justice League: Was ist der Snyder Cut?

Anyone who does not constantly follow the events in the world of superhero films will quickly scratch their heads when the “Snyder Cut” is mentioned on the Internet. Are there suddenly also several cut versions of the comic book adaptations? In the case of “Justice League” there are really two versions, but the road to the version desired by fans was long and arduous.

The making of “Justice League” (2017)

The relationship between Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder has been cemented through a longstanding collaboration. With “300” Snyder gave the studio a huge success, “Watchmen” and “Sucker Punch”, however, fell short of expectations. Nevertheless, when it came time for Warner Bros. to invest more in superhero productions again, the right man was quickly found in Snyder. “Man of Steel” represented a new start, not only among the Superman films, but also the starting signal for a DC universe that should compete with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While “Man of Steel” still told a rather independent story, the subsequent DC films clearly aimed at a “Justice League” film, which should bring the heroes together in one film. Even “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” by Snyder from 2016 was a rather hasty attempt to introduce as many heroes as possible as quickly as possible. While Superman already got his own film with “Man of Steel”, “BvS” had to introduce Batman and Wonder Woman. Not only that, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg were also briefly mentioned to prepare the audience for Justice League.

“Wonder Woman” and “Suicide Squad” were made by other directors, but Warner Bros. still left Snyder with the big titles that shaped the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) particularly strongly. Shortly before the filming of “Justice League” was finished, a stroke of fate overshadowed the production: Snyder’s daughter Autumn took her own life, whereupon Snyder took a break to be with his family.

Warner Bros. made the decision to have Justice League completed by a different director. The choice fell on Joss Whedon, who already shot the first two Avengers films for Marvel and therefore offered himself for a great superhero blockbuster. Snyder accepted this decision and so Justice League was released in November 2017, still under Snyder’s name.

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut: The fans demand the “real” film

Justice League made money, but it wasn’t a huge hit and disappointed many fans. It was immediately noticeable that the film didn’t feel like a Snyder production throughout, the style of which is quite distinctive. The relatively short running time and missing scenes, about which Snyder had already spoken, suggested that Whedon not only completed Snyder’s film version, but changed it.

In fact, scenes were replaced or rewritten by re-shoots, and some important changes were made. So Whedon removed the villain Darkseid from the film and only left Steppenwolf as a new opponent, who was only Darkseid’s subordinate in the actual version. The character of the cyborg, whom Snyder described as the heart of the whole film, was largely removed from the film.

The more it became known about the differences between the two versions, the louder the fans’ requests for the so-called “Snyder Cut” became. However, of course, there was no finished version of Snyder’s film version in the archives of Warner Bros., the path from the produced raw material to the presentable film would be long and associated with high costs. Costs that Warner Bros. would hardly pay for an alternative version of a film that has already been released.

But fans are fans and so they did not give up. The hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut was omnipresent on Twitter, the studio was flooded with emails, letters and calls from Snyder supporters. Even a plane that drew a “#ReleaseTheSnyderCut” band was booked to circling over the San Diego ComicCon.

The Snyder miracle comes true

Snyder himself was grateful for the support and heated up the fans by declaring that the “Snyder Cut” did exist. In fact, negotiations were already underway internally, after all, Warner Bros.’s encouragement for the Snyder Cut did not leave it cold. In addition, Warner Bros. was definitely interested in new content at this point, because the streaming service HBO Max was of course intended to attract as many subscribers as possible.

Warner Bros. and Snyder dropped the bomb on Vevo, a social media platform that feels only used by Zack Snyder: “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” will be released on HBO Max in 2021. The cast of the film is behind the project and is ready for re-shoots, which of course will push up the budget again. It remains to be seen in the future whether the decision in favor of Warner Bros. is ultimately worthwhile. At least one thing is certain: The Snyder Cut is coming!

Justice League: Die Serie?

The project may now be firmly in the hands of Zack Snyder again, but fans have to be prepared for surprises. Contrary to expectations, “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” will not be a film. Instead, Snyder’s version is published as a miniseries. With 4 episodes of 60 minutes in length, the series corresponds to a four-hour film. The decision to publish the film as a series naturally came from Warner.

A new episode will come out weekly, forcing viewers to subscribe to HBO Max for at least a month if they don’t want to wait for all of the episodes or a subsequent four-hour film version to be released. Here you can be inspired by “The Mandalorian”, because the “Star Wars” series on Disney + also benefited from a weekly release.

Presumably, the division into four chapters was a condition accepted by Snyder from Warner, and fans should also be happy that the Snyder Cut will be published at all.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Trailer

In August 2020 at the DC FanDome, a virtual event for numerous DC productions, the first trailer for “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was released. Then followed in November 2020 Update des Trailers, which added a few new scenes with Cyborg, Aquaman and Wonder Woman’s mother Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen).

Since the plot of the film is already known, the trailer for Zack Snyder’s new cut of “Justice League” doesn’t waste any time with explanations. What is striking, however, is the image format, which is reminiscent of the 4: 3 aspect ratio of a tube television.

Snyder shot the film in this format, which is particularly suitable for IMAX screens and could be cut off at the top or bottom for normal cinemas to get a typical 16: 9 or 21: 9 aspect ratio. Since the “Snyder Cut” is now Snyder’s very personal film version and the studio gives him a free hand, “Justice League” will also be shown on HBO Max in this high format.

On the television at home, the picture naturally appears smaller and not larger, as would be the case in the IMAX cinema. However, Snyder argues that in this way no information is lost, the viewers see the whole picture and not just a section.

Will the “Snyder Cut” also come to Germany?

For German fans there is still no certainty as to whether, when or where the new version of “Justice League” will be shown. Snyder himself promises, however, that there should be an opportunity in countries without HBO Max to enjoy the extensive hero blockbuster. Otherwise, German fans can see the “Snyder Cut” directly on HBO Max via VPN.
