Lewis Hamilton “requires £ 40m per season to sign a new Mercedes contract”

Lewis Hamilton is firm on his requests for £ 40 million per year to sign a new deal with Mercedes.

The six-time world champion, who starts his title defense in Austria this weekend, is out of contract at the end of the year.

Now the season should finally begin, Hamilton is expected to hold talks with Mercedes boss Toto Wolff about a new contract in the coming weeks.

And the Daily Mail has said that the British superstar will clarify his assessment, with the 35-year-old intent on improving his current salary of £ 36 million a year.

Hamilton is claimed to require £ 40 million a year – and there is hope that the two sides will agree on an agreement.

The reigning champion was previously connected with Ferrari, but the Italians have already decided to field their driver in 2021, with Sebastian Vettel as axed and Carlos Sainz of McLaren joining the team with Charles Leclerc.

It is unclear how long Hamilton, if he signs a new deal with Mercedes, will extend his stay in Formula 1 for.

The Briton will begin his quest this weekend to match Michael Schumacher’s seven crown title record.

And there is the expectation that the former McLaren star will want to usurp the legendary German before calling the time in his brilliant career.

Meanwhile, David Coulthard expects Hamilton to keep up this weekend despite seven months without competing.

The Formula 1 season finally begins in Austria on Sunday after the traditional Australian forerunner was suspended in the eleventh hour in March due to the global coronavirus crisis.

Since then Hamilton has used his F1 superstar profile to campaign for greater diversity in sport and against racism, but now he is returning his attention to the search for history.

The six-time Mercedes world champion can equal Michael Schumacher’s record seven, and is only eight wins away from becoming the sport’s most successful race winner.

And former F1 star Coulthard expects Hamilton to be on despite the last races at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in early December.

“Lewis will obviously be asked about his blocking activities, his views on various things, and obviously he has taken a public position on what is admirable,” he said.

“He is able to express his point of view as an adult man rather than a young man. We can all accept that during the journey of life we acquire experience, knowledge and patience in some areas.

“Once he gets through it, he’ll put on his helmet and do his job to be quick.”
