Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan does not believe that life in Villa Park could have been any better if Matt Targett had been signed up for the big summer.
The 24-year-old moved from the Premier League Southampton to Aston Villa in the summer. According to reports, the fee could rise to 17 million pounds.
Dean Smith started the season with Neil Taylor as his first choice, but Targett has been nodding in recent games and has been more than impressive.
He made his Villans debut in a 2-2 draw with Burnley before retaining his place in the 5-1 win over Norwich City – and Whelan liked what he saw.
"I was very impressed," he told Football Insider.
"He waited a long time for his chance, he was hardly used at first and has used it perfectly. It was a great start for him.

"It helps to have good players in front of you, that makes a big difference. But he was the box-to-box player on the left side they needed.
"Targett has really good experience in the Premier League and has been committed to strengthening a position that needs to be strengthened. He could be a really good signature. "
