The list of comparatively light and slim e-bikes with Mahle’s popular X35 drive never seems to end. Ribble from Great Britain also uses this system and installs it not only in many racing bikes, but also in the Urban Bike series Hybrid AL e.
In a nutshell, the drive consists of a 250 watt hub motor in the rear wheel and a slim 250 Wh battery that is permanently installed in the bike’s down tube. The system is controlled in a very minimalist way via a button on the top tube. This not only represents the battery capacity, but the desired speed level can also be selected. A classic display is deliberately avoided, and you can optionally use your smartphone with the associated app.
Ribble uses an 11-speed derailleur from SRAM’s NX series as a gearshift, the hydraulic disc brakes come from Tektro. The tires are relatively narrow at 35 mm and certainly contribute to the light overall weight of the bikes: depending on the equipment, this should be between 13 and 15 kg.
With the regular Hybrid AL e, Ribble offers a diamond frame in the colors blue and copper which is particularly noticeable with its curved seat tube – which is definitely a matter of taste! The bikes are also available in a so-called Fully Loaded Editionwhich then includes commuter equipment with luggage rack (in frame color), mudguards and a battery (!) lighting set. Why you don’t rely on an integrated solution with a connection to the e-bike battery can only be answered by the manufacturer itself.
Much more interesting, however, is the step-through version of the bikes, which comes with a comfort frame in a trapezoid shape! Here Ribble also installs a compact thumb button on the handlebar, with which the electric drive can be operated much more intuitively. In addition, with this model, the cables and lines are routed through the stem into the frame in a very contemporary way – which makes the handlebars look much tidier. So all in all a really interesting bike, and the paintwork too Deep Berry stands excellent.
And to top it all, Ribble delivers with the CGR AL e Step Through An additional variant of the comfort frame with racing handlebars and Shimano’s Tiagra or 105 gears. A really extraordinary bike that can inspire!
In summary, it can be said: Ribble’s hybrid step-through bikes are top, the models with diamond frames fall significantly behind in comparison. After all, this is also reflected in the price: at 2,100 euros and 2,200 euros, the diamond frame models are slightly cheaper than the step-through bikes. These cost (still moderate) 2,200 or 2,300 euros, the racing handlebar models then start at 2,300 euros.
