Declaration on Fire and Rescue Declaration evacuating 100 homes and businesses

Derbyshire fire and rescue has published the following statement:

"Up to 100 homes and some shops were evacuated when firefighters continue to fight a fire in a commercial garage on Twyford Street in Derby. The properties were evacuated on Harriett Street, Grove Street and Twyford Street, and some stores were also evacuated on Normanton Road.

"Firefighters were called to the fire tonight at 6:56. Crews from Nottingham Road, Kingsway, Ascot Drive, Alfreton, Ilkeston, Stapleford, Long Eaton, Clay Cross and Castle Donnington are present in the fight against the fire.

"Regarding the scene, group leader Sean Wells said," It was decided to evacuate the people who live and work on different roads around the fire because of the presence of commercial cylinders.

"For the evacuees at St. Augustine's Church, Upper Dale Road, DE23 8BP, a refugee camp has been set up to shelter them until the incident is resolved.

"We are working with our emergency service partners and the emergency planning team, and once we are convinced that the cylinders are isolated and pose no risk to the residents, we will tell the residents that they can return to their homes."

Normanton Road, Twyford Street, Harriet Street and Grove Street remain closed during the incident.

"The incident is expected to continue for the next few hours."
