Outstanding defender Owen Otasowie is one of the youngsters approaching a Premier League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers, academy director Scott Sellars told the Birmingham Mail.

The New York-born center-back is in quite a unique position, having taken his international bow before just one appearance in the top flight of English football.

Otasowie’s only exposure to first-team football so far has been a brief cameo in last season’s Europa League.

But a man who was turned away by West Ham before moving to the Midlands in 2017 had a chance to impress the US national team on Thursday night during a rather boring 0-0 draw with Wales.

However, Otasowie has been training regularly with Nuno Espirito Santo’s team of late, and Sellars believes that an injury or two could open the door for him at the club level. As has happened with his partner Max Kilman.

“They are very close. An injury or two means they have a chance. Owen, at the moment, we believe that working with the first team will probably be the best thing for his development, “said Sellars, who suggests that the teenager will not be loaned, like Morgan Gibbs-White in Swansea.

Sellars is also full of praise for left-back Ryan Giles, who currently plays championship football in Coventry City, and under-23 forward Theo Corbeanu.

Unfortunately for Otasowie, Nuno is not short of central defense options, particularly now that Kilman has established himself as a player of Premier League quality.

Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker are also capable of throwing themselves on defense if necessary.
