The Syrian opposition supported by Turkey reached a strategic peak in northeastern Syria when the offensive against Kurdish fighters reportedly reached its fourth day.

The news agency Anadolu said the armed forces had arrived at the M-4 highway connecting the Syrian cities of Manbij and Qamishli. The road is about 30 km south of the Turkish border.

Turkey has announced its intention to repress the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which it considers terrorists, within its own borders because of its ties to a decades-long Kurdish uprising.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Friday that Turkey will not stop until the YPG, which is the backbone of the US-backed ground forces against the so-called Islamic state, withdraws from the border over a distance of 30 kilometers.
