The Celebrity Edge was officially christened Tuesday by Pate Malala Yousafzai in Port Everglades during a Tuesday ceremony.

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Yousafzai was accompanied by everyone on board to "bless this ship and all who sail on it."

The naming ceremony brought together more than 3,000 guests, staff, crew members and students to commemorate the debut of Celebrity's first new ship in six years and the first new ship series in more than a decade.

"We are honored that Malala was ready to be the godfather of this ship, a role that reflects centuries of maritime tradition," said Richard D. Fain, chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, the parent company of Celebrity. "We are particularly proud that Malala's example of unyielding perseverance and achievement is an inspiration to our crew, all of whom have worked so hard and made real sacrifices to build a better life for themselves and their families."

Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, President and CEO of Celebrity Cruises, added, "I am very proud to have Malala Yousafzai as Patron of Celebrity Edge. Malala embodies our commitment to opening the world through education and gender equality. Seeing them aboard our ship sends a strong message to our crew, representing over 70 different nationalities, and to our guests sailing around the world. Today's ceremony was touching and symbolic of what Celebrity Cruises stands for. I am grateful to Malala, her family and the Malala Fund for accepting today's events, and look forward to continuing our work together around the world. "

"I fight for millions of girls in situations of poverty or war that they did not create, and they can learn what they need to choose a future for themselves, but to continue to make progress in girls' education "We Need Executive Support I am so grateful to Celebrity Cruises for their generous support and investment in the potential of girls everywhere," said Malala Yousafzai, co-founder of the Malala Fund.
