Manchester United are “increasingly confident” to complete a record move of £ 135 million for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez this summer.
The Spaniard has been on the club’s radar since Louis van Gaal was at the helm of Old Trafford, but United has been rejected twice in an attempt to sign the midfielder.
Niguez, 25, signed a striking nine-year deal with Atletico in 2017, but includes a £ 135 million buyback clause and the Daily Star’s claim that United is ready to trigger it.
United saw Niguez in action against Liverpool at Anfield earlier this month and were impressed with the 25-year-old’s performance as Champions League holders were eliminated by Diego Simeone’s side.
Niguez would arrive to replace Paul Pogba and the deal depended on United releasing the Frenchman this summer.
Real Madrid and Juventus are both thrilled with the World Cup winner, but United wants around £ 120 million for their services.
Solskjaer will then be given the full amount of that money to spend on Niguez and it is claimed that the Norwegian is excited by the prospect of pairing the Spaniard with Bruno Fernandes in United’s midfield.
The Portuguese star started life sensationally at Old Trafford, but Solskjaer remains thrilled to strengthen his midfield.
The 47-year-old is interested in Ajax star Donny van de Beek, but fears that the Dutchman prefers to move to Real Madrid.
Niguez would become one of Old Trafford’s highest paid players, but United would have had more room to breathe with Pogba earning a lot from the books.
