Mardi Gras parades canceled in New Orleans due to COVID

Colorful Mardi Gras parades in which people aboard elaborate floats throw trinkets among attendees have been canceled in New Orleans because crowds could spread the coronavirus, authorities announced Tuesday.

For the 2021 season at least, the pandemic has ended Mardi Gras in New Orleans as it has long been celebrated. City spokesman Beau Tidwell said Tuesday that no parades will take place in the weeks leading up to and during “Fat Tuesday” because they are unable to comply with restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus.

The cancellation is largely based on a 250-person limit for outdoor crowds. “You can’t do traditional parades with such a small group,” Tidwell said.
