The former Barcelona midfielder arrived in Ecuador on Saturday to be presented as the guest of honor to play in the traditional game played by the Ecuadorian team to kick off his year.
This season, Barcelona faces October 9 from Guayas at the Atahualpa Stadium on Sunday. On Saturday the team trained to finalize details and that team will include the Argentine in its eleventh starter.
Javier Mascherano was presented with jersey number 96, this in reference to being the sixth invited player and the second ex-Barça to be invited after Ronaldinho Gaucho will start this new tradition in 2016.
The Argentine retired in November while playing for Estudiantes de La Plata and weeks later he agreed to work with the Argentine Football Association on youth development issues.
THE RETREAT OF ERAZO
The game will have a plus since a football history of that country announced his retirement. The central defender said goodbye to football at 32 years of age on the same day he made them official on social networks. This veteran was part of the October 9 team that just won its promotion to the highest Ecuadorian soccer circuit.
Erazo was part of Barcelona for two seasons where he was crowned champion in 2012.
These clubs will be ready for the start of the tournament the following week. Barcelona will visit Manta and October 9 will debut in the first division against Liga de Quito in the capital.
