Even members of royalty can be locked out. As it turns out, Meghan Markle will no longer be able to have British citizenship.
This exclusive is due to the fact that according to the law within the United Kingdom, anyone who spends more than 270 days outside the country, and is doing a citizenship process, automatically loses it.
It is important to note that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made the decision to distance themselves from the crown. Then they traveled to Canada with the intentions of living there, but decided that the city of Los Angeles was the ideal.
Just because you can no longer be a citizen does not mean that you cannot have a UK passport. This document can still be managed by being married to a citizen of the country, such as Prince Harry.
However, this has never been a concern for the actress. Before leaving the country, Meghan Markle was already a permanent resident.
Lawyers specializing in the matter stated the following:
“The legal requirements you must meet before submitting the application are ‘that you: be 18 years of age or older when you submit the application; you are married or the civil partner of a British citizen on the date of application; have lived in the UK for a minimum of 3 years before applying; he is of sound mind so that he understands the step he is taking, can communicate in English (or Welsh or Scottish Gaelic) to an acceptable degree, have sufficient knowledge of life in the UK and be of good character. “
