After one year, Disney Plus has the same market share as Sky Ticket in Germany.

With Disney Plus, Disney has established itself as one of the four big players in the German streaming market in less than a year. Amazon, Netflix and Sky each lost market share compared to the previous year. This emerges from figures from the analysis company Goldmedia, in which the market shares of the various video streaming subscriptions in Germany are listed. Sky in particular suffers from Disney Plus

Disney launched Disney Plus in Germany in March 2020. In the fourth quarter of 2020, nine percent of the streaming subscriptions concluded in Germany were for Disney Plus. In this period, Disney Plus is on par with Sky Ticket, which also has a market share of nine percent. A year earlier, Sky Ticket’s market share was 11.9 percent.

Sky Ticket has been active in the market for several years and, measured by this, the share of Disney Plus is considerable. Sky in particular has suffered from the launch of Disney Plus. Because Disney will market big movies and blockbusters itself in the future. In the past, the big Disney blockbusters from the Star Wars and Marvel series first appeared on Sky. The pay TV broadcaster has had to do without such content since the start of Disney Plus.

Amazon and Netflix have lost market share

Amazon and Netflix also lost market share, with the decline in the market leader Prime Video being stronger than in Netflix. At the end of 2019 Prime Video had a market share of 38.2 percent, in the fourth quarter of 2020 it was only 33 percent. At Netflix, the market share decreased from 26.1 percent to 24 percent within one year.

Sky is not just about watching films, series and documentaries, but also about sporting events. This is what the provider Dazn has focused on, which had a market share of seven percent at both the end of 2019 and the end of 2020.

Telekom’s Magenta TV has a share of six percent, while RTL’s TV Now has four percent. Apple TV Plus has a market share of three percent in Germany.

All subscription services together achieved a turnover of 2.5 billion euros in 2020. This corresponds to a growth of 28 percent compared to 2019.
