New COVID-19 Rental Assistance Program Announced in Hidalgo County

Eligible Hidalgo County residents financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic will receive short-term rental assistance, Hidalgo County announced Thursday.

The Hidalgo County Urban County Program is now accepting applications for its COVID-19 Rental Assistance program. Qualifying residents will receive assistance paying their apartment or house rent for up to six months, according to a press release.

Rental assistance comes from $ 1,696,154 that was awarded to the Hidalgo County Urban County Program by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. Applicants will need to provide proof that they have been financially affected due to COVID-19.

To be eligible, tenants must meet the following guidelines:

• Must have been economically affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

• You must have a household income below 80% of the area median income as established by HUD.

• Your monthly rent must be equal to or less than 150% of the area fair market rent.

• Up to 6 consecutive months of rental assistance can be provided, including up to 5 months of rent due and one month of rent due in the future.

• The tenant and landlords must participate.

• Applications will be processed on a first come, first serve basis.

• If you are already receiving assistance with a tenant voucher, are in a unit that receives project-based assistance, or are in public housing, you are not eligible.

When applying, tenants must present the following documents:

• Tenant application

• Valid photo ID for the applicant

• Certification of tenants

• Proof of income for the last 30 days

• Conflict of interest form

• Certification of landlords and tenants

• Executed lease or, if there is no written lease, a certification proving tenure and the ability to provide proof of tenure (canceled check or money order) is required

• Documentation of the lessor of late payments
