New step back for City in their title aspirations after losing to Tottenham

The South Korean Son Heung-min (5) and the Argentine Giovani Lo Celso (65) were the authors of the goals of the ‘Spurs’, which in this way reached 20 points and surpassed Chelsea, which had been placed provisional leader of the English championship after winning 2-0 in their visit to Newcastle (13th).

The team coached by Pep Guardiola is stuck in the middle of the table, 10th with 12 points after having already lost half of the points played, four days after visiting Olympiakos to seal their classification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

A few days after announcing the renewal of the Catalan coach’s contract, Guardiola’s men did not offer their best version, hardly bringing danger to the opposing goal (except for an occasion by Gabriel Jesus in the 9th minute and a goal annulled by the VAR to Aymeric Laporte) and again showing a defensive weakness that cost City both goals.

Earlier, Chelsea won 2-0 on their visit to an apathetic Newcastle (13th), who needed an hour to enter the game, which Frank Lampard’s players took advantage of to dominate the match and raise their self-esteem in the face of the trip to Rennes on Tuesday in the Champions League.

Chelsea’s tactical, technical, physical and psychological dominance was total, superior for example to what it had shown three weeks ago in the Champions League against Rennes (3-0).

The ‘Blues’ prevailed with a goal against Argentine defender Federico Fernández (10) and a goal from Tammy Abraham (65), although the result could have been much more bulky if the London forwards had been more effective.

The London team’s convincing performance came without Brazilian Thiago Silva, who has just returned from the World Cup qualifiers in South America, and whose role in defensive stabilization was essential in October.

The surprise had come shortly before, with the defeat at home of Aston Villa (6th) against a Brigthon that moves away from the relegation zone.

Danny Welbeck put the visitors ahead (12) and although Ezni Konsa Ngoyo tied for the locals as soon as the second half started, the three points flew from Villa Park with a goal from Solly March (56).

Saturday’s day will end with the visit of West Brom (18th) to Manchester United (14th) in a duel for the needy.
