The Royal Navy said British wartime ships completed a “large scale” operation to monitor seven Russian ships following “unusually high levels of activity” off its coast. The Royal Navy said: “As the Royal Navy prepares to assist the NHS and other government departments To cope with the response to the coronavirus outbreak, nine British ships have overshadowed seven Russian ships in UK waters.
“The Navy has completed a concentrated operation to obscure Russian warships after unusually high levels of activity in the English Channel and the North Sea.
“Type 23 HMS Kent, HMS Sutherland, HMS Argyll and HMS Richmond frigates have joined the offshore patrol boats HMS Tyne and HMS Mersey together with RFA Tideforce, RFA Tidespring and HMS Echo for large-scale operation with support of NATO allies. “
It comes after three Russian warships were escorted out of the English Channel by a tiny Royal Navy patrol ship in February.
HMS Mersey broke away from a fisheries protection patrol to overshadow the Russian spy ship Feodor Golovin, the landing ship Alexander Ostrakovsky and the oil tanker Yelnya.
